Healthcare in Pattaya — Better Than You Might Expect
One of the most pleasant surprises for new arrivals in Pattaya is the quality of private healthcare. Thailand's private hospital sector is internationally accredited, well-equipped, and staffed by doctors who frequently trained abroad. For expats and retirees, this means access to high-quality, English-language medical care at a fraction of what you would pay in the UK, USA, or Australia.
Pattaya has three main private hospitals serving the expat community, each with different strengths and price points.
Bangkok Hospital Pattaya
Bangkok Hospital Pattaya is widely regarded as the best private hospital in the region. It is part of the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMS) group — Thailand's largest private hospital network — and holds JCI accreditation (Joint Commission International), the gold standard for international hospital quality.

Pattaya International Hospital
Pattaya International Hospital (PIH) has been serving the expat community since 1979 and is one of the most established hospitals in the city. It is well-regarded for its accessibility and the fact that it has historically been more affordable than Bangkok Hospital.

Practical Tips for Using Pattaya Hospitals
Always carry your insurance card. If you have international insurance with direct billing, present your card at reception before any treatment. This avoids paying upfront and claiming back later.
Ask for an itemised bill. Thai hospitals are generally transparent about costs, but it is always worth asking for a breakdown before you agree to treatment.
For emergencies, go to Bangkok Hospital. It has the most comprehensive emergency department and the best specialist backup.
For routine care, any of the three hospitals is fine. Many expats have a preferred GP at one hospital and use it consistently for continuity of care.
Prescriptions are cheap. Medication in Thailand is significantly cheaper than in Western countries, even without insurance. Many common medications are available over the counter at pharmacies.
What About the Government Hospitals?
Pattaya has government hospitals (including Banglamung Hospital), but these are generally not recommended for expats due to long waiting times, limited English-speaking staff, and lower standards of facilities. Private hospitals are the right choice for most expats.
Finding a Doctor You Trust
The most important thing is to find a GP you trust and stick with them. Ask for recommendations from other expats in Pattaya — the expat community is generally very willing to share their experiences. Online forums and Facebook groups (Pattaya Expats Club, Pattaya Expats Forum) are good sources of doctor recommendations.
